Two local construction firms have won contracts from the U.S. military with a combined value of $16.1 million.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded to Satterfield & Pontikes Construction Inc. a $10.5 million contract to build an educational training facility at Fort Sam Houston.
The 52,000-square-foot facility will be used for medical training and will include mock operating and critical care rooms, says Karl Moser, senior project manager for Satterfield & Pontikes.
The general contractor, founded in 1989, employs more than 350 people at its Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio locations. The company completed more than $157 million worth of work in 2004 and is projected to have revenues close to $175 million for 2005.
A separate $5.6 million contract was awarded to locally based MAPCO, Inc. by the U.S. Air Force. It calls for the company to renovate officer's living quarters at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio.
"We are the prime contractor on the project, so we will be doing everything from the ground up," program manager Abe Villareal says. "(The project) is in phases, so we will do the mechanical (work) first and then the renovations."
MAPCO, Inc. has been in business since 1991 and works strictly with government agencies such as the military and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The company also specializes in renovating historical government sites.
